Faris Khan

My journey into the world of coding began at the tender age of eight. From those early days of discovery, my enthusiasm for programming has grown and branched out into diverse aspects of the field. I honed my coding skills through participating in numerous hackathons, turning these experiences into stepping stones on my path towards mastery.

My interest in Artificial Intelligence has resulted in the creation of several innovative projects. Notably, I developed an algorithm allowing an AI to determine the shortest path between any two given points on a map - a testament to my passion for pushing boundaries in the realm of technology.

Prior to co-founding Block Society with Amaan, I gathered invaluable experiences through hosting coding camps. This included offering courses at ISNA Canada and Muslim Neighbour Nexus, which are among the leading Islamic Organizations in Canada. Such experiences broadened my perspective on the vital role coding plays in our community and the emerging digital age.

This realization inspired a deeper mission for Block Society: to guide inquisitive students on their journey into the world of programming, and to equip them with essential skills for navigating the digital landscape. We are dedicated to fostering their passion for coding, empowering them to excel in this ever-evolving field.

Experiences:

  • B.S. in Computational Modeling & Data Analytics (CMDA) with a specialization in Cyber Security.

  • Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets in Citizen Leader Track.

  • Deloitte Digital Launch Pad Winner (April 2023)

  • 7x hackathon winner

  • University of Toronto Artificial Intelligence and Advanced AI course

  • IBM Data Management Certificate

Amaan Farooqi

I developed a strong passion for coding many years back when I began to learn Java script. I was quickly fascinated by programming and soon began to explore Python to develop my skills in both languages. Over the years, I’ve been able to hone my coding skills and create several projects in both programming languages. Along with Faris, I’ve led coding camps at large community organizations such as ISNA Canada and Muslim neighbour nexus over the past year.

As we taught community members the fundamentals of python, we realized the importance of teaching programming to the youth in a manner that is interactive and caters to their different learning styles. Coding is a crucial skill that the youth must develop at a young age as it is quickly becoming integrated into many careers. We feel that it is our responsibility to ensure that the youth are well equipped with programming knowledge in order to excel in a world that is becoming increasingly digitized.

Experiences:

  • Computer Science Major at the University of Toronto

  • CS50 (Harvard University’s introduction to Computer Science)

  • Web Dev internship at i3 Institute
